Final Verdict: Sonic Lost World

Written Review

Hello, it’s Pedz’s here and this is my Final Verdict.

Well, it’s been a while since Sonic Boom and here we have a new Sonic game recently played and finished called Sonic Lost World.

We’ll start with how it is considered to be Sonic just ripping off Super Mario Galaxy, and to some extent I agree it does have many stages that are broken up lots of worlds, like Galaxys small oddly shaped planets and space constructions. Though, at the same time, there are levels that aren’t like that, or are, but are much bigger in size so it doesn’t feel that way. Obviously, that isn’t really the only comparison to make, the bosses are on smaller sphericle planets similar to Galaxy, the springs act like the Star Launchers from Galaxy, so it’s completely understandable that people saying It’s Sonic Galaxy, as it’s lifted a fair bit, but it does do things differently, also.

As I said the planets tend to be long, because of Sonic and his speed smaller planets wouldn’t be suited to the gameplay, there are also levels that just play like normal levels without the planet like system at all, or at least it’s minimal. You also have a mixture of 3D and 2D gameplay, for example, the desert levels have a large flat sandy outside area for the most part, but when you enter some kind of temple you end up playing on a 2-dimensional plain. In these sections, there’s a lot more verticality to the levels as Sonic reaches the top of said temples. It’s more about actual platforming than speed. When talking about the gameplay in general I think the game is decent enough. It doesn’t do anything particularly special, or new, but I do actually think lifting from Galaxy was of a benefit because the game has sections that are split up and split up well, I think they managed to balance the speed of sonic with level length and a variety of decent ideas.

Another thing that’s nice to see is the massive amounts of colour. It’s a lovely-looking game and while Playing Boom and 06 they did have nice areas at points, this just seems more like Sonic of old with its palette and designs than either of those two games. Even proper Badniks are here in full force and not the crappy generic robots. Unfortunately, you then have the Deadly Six, they’re a group of Zeni, I don’t know what Zeni are but they are them. They all have powers and seem to be trying to wipe out the world which will make them much more powerful. Eggman is in this and is in charge of them Zetti for a small period of time, and then he teams up with Sonic and Tails to save the world.

Honestly, I think this was a step in the right direction for Sonic to go, it kind of feels like if this was the the way they transitioned from 2D Sonic to 3D back in the day and iterated on it and refined it, then we’d have great 3D Sonic games, the issue is this is one of many attempts of Sega and Sonic Team trying something that is different from the last 3D title and different from the next, instead of trying to double down on a style they attempt to try something different with a silly gimmick that ultimately fails. To me, this really was a game that should have been a starting point to make great 3D games.

The Audio is great, SFX are clear and distinct which is hand when there are several things going on, or enemies are rumbling in the ground ready to pop out. The voice acting is typical Sonic, but I think the game is one of the better-acted games, even if I don’t like a voice of a particular character I wouldn’t say it was bad, but that I’m not a fan of the voice or accent or tone itself. With this Eggman is, as usual,
the best of the VO’s. Mike Pollock has got Eggman down to a tee. He can sound menacing when needed, but his voice really suits how immature Eggman can be and his delivery of little jokes is spot on.

The music is generally really good, and the music varies from a pop/rock sound to western to full-on orchestral. Some of the tracks sound like they’ve been lifted from a Mario game, and I don’t mean they ripped out the Galaxy music and rearranged some notes, what I mean is the general music arrangement sounds like it would fit in Galaxy or the much newer Odyssey. It seems less like Sonic than what I am used to. Some levels, in particular, have an amazing bit of music to them. The cave levels music to me really stands up there with Donkey Kong Country’s Aquatic Ambience, which from me, is really high praise.

Basically, what I’m saying is this is one of the best, if not the best Sonic 3D title, and while that isn’t saying massive amounts as some are bloody awful, I do feel it’s actually all around a well-done package. It does have its missteps that stop it from being very good, but it was a genuinely fun game to play.

Scoring this is actually quite hard for me, as it’s a really enjoyable game, but does have some of the faults of the other 3D titles and I do find the Setti annoying, but, I’m gonna give it a 7 Pugsley’s out of 10.
